Synopsis Where The Crawdads Sing
In 1952, Kya was six years old. Her mother left for their home in the swamps. Shortly thereafter, her siblings left one by one. Kya was left alone with her alcoholic and abusive father. Kya only went to school for one day. She decided never to return because of the teasing and harassment she received from the other children. Kya spends her time in the marshes with the seagulls. She learns about nature from books she finds in the library or that her friends bring her.
One of Kya’s friends is Tate Walker. He is a boy older than her and a friend of her sister Jodie. Tate taught Kya to read and write. He also gave her books about biology. Tate and Kya fell in love. But Tate had to go to college and promised to come back. However, Tate did not keep his promise and had no contact with Kya.
In 1969, Chase Andrews was found dead at the bottom of a fire tower in the swamps. Sheriff Ed Jackson suspects that Chase was murdered. There were no footprints around his body. Ed begins to suspect Kya. He learns that Kya and Chase had a secret relationship in the swamps until shortly before Chase married a city girl named Pearl.
Back in the past, after Tate leaves Kya, she meets Chase Andrews, a handsome and popular guy. He is a former high school quarterback. Chase approaches Kya. He invites her to a picnic. Chase gives Kya a rare shell and tries to force a sexual encounter with her, but she manages to escape. When they meet again ten days later, Chase apologizes. He takes Kya to an abandoned fire tower. Kya gave Chase a necklace made of the shells. Chase said: “I will not touch Kya unless she wants me to. Kya gets closer to Chase.
Tate, home from college, wanted to apologize to Kya, but he saw Kya kissing Chase and turned to leave. Chase starts talking about marriage. He invites Kya to spend the night with him. On the appointed day, however, Chase does not show up. He has already married Pearl without telling Kya.
Back in the present, Ed Jackson continues to gather evidence to prove that Kya killed Chase. When Chase’s body was found, he found Kya’s shell necklace around Chase’s neck. He also finds Kya’s fingerprints on the fire tower. He also finds Tate’s biology books in her house. She also hears testimony.
